In a chat with Team Fayz, Jyoti delves deep into her writing process and more.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

To be honest, I never really thought that I would become a writer someday. Around seven years ago, I found an online platform to read amazing books and to share my short stories, poetry, and novels. This gave me the chance to publish my works online, which was available to a wider audience from all around the world. The votes and comments came flooding when I published every poem or story. I’d never experienced anything like it before. Each day, I woke up to messages of encouragement from readers wanting to know “what I’m writing next” & saying “how inspiring my books are” so, that’s how my writing journey has been started. As days and months passed, I've received so many opportunities to publish my works and I started contributing to many anthology books. I was very much happy with the response by my readers and so, I decided to write and publish my first solo book.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

My first book was published in 2016 when I was 17 years old. I was into my second-year graduation.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It usually takes around 7 to 8 months for me to bring out a poetry book or collection of short stories/articles but, it might take around a year or more to work on a full-length novel.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I prefer to stay offline. I completely try my best to focus on writing, editing and researching for the book. I relax with music and watching movies once in a while. I try to make the process exciting in my own ways. Reading books, music and travel...

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

For me, inspiration, information and ideas come in various ways and I always learn something from every person I meet. No matter who it is, what their background is, I firmly believe that every person we meet has something to teach us in one way or another. I learn something from every book I read, every movie I watch and, depending on the plot, poetry, articles or stories I am writing, I do a lot of research. The importance of research is very high, so it’s so very important to read as well, I keep in touch with my good friends who are into the writing field to learn something new from them.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I like to cook, I like reading books and article, I like to sing, I focus on my Business and other important works. I paint sometimes, and listening to music is my favorite thing to do! I was an active blogger but, I had to take a break! And, I was never a big fan of movies or TV shows however, I am now allowing myself to enjoy the pleasure of movies of different languages.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That, it’s hard for me to kill the characters and that, I can create a great hero out of a bad villain.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I've written six books, my latest book is ANAMIKA: BEYOND WORDS. And, it’s extremely difficult for me to choose one particular book as my favorite.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Yes. I hear from my readers at times and they give me all these wonderful feelings that I cannot express. I cannot easily define my happiness in words. It feels so great when I see a good review or hear from my readers; I spend months and years creating a book! I truly feel grateful when my readers talk to me personally perhaps, not every author receives such lovely emails and texts every day but, until now, I received a lot of messages from my readers saying that my books have somehow changed their life, helped them overcome depression and sadness. I feel so great for I always wanted to inspire people through my work.

What do you think makes a good story?

It is a matter of including key elements such as: tension, controversy, amazing character behavior, mystery, suspense, the structure and the rhythm, creating the memorable and believable characters, the dialogues and most importantly, being honest with your story makes all the difference.

Explain briefly about all of your books and their concepts?

My first book Sensation of a Soul has a collection of poems and short stories, and the second book is 'The Mystic Soul' was published in 2017. The third 'Whispers of the Soul' is a poetry book that was published in 2018 and my fourth book is 'The Curved Rainbow'. The fifth 'The Forest of Feelings' was published on the same day in the year 2019 and it's a unique poetry book with hundreds of illustrations. My sixth book Anamika is also an illustrated poetry book. I write on love, relationships, family, dreams, memories, life, abuse, depression, death, emotions and so on. I sometimes feel as if there is no emotion that I've missed writing about. I mostly prefer to put down the reality of the world through my books. Through my work, I explore more about the feelings attached to love.

What is USP for an author?

First of all, I firmly believe it is not an easy task to catch the attention of readers, sometimes it is not important to know what the book is about, the genre or the style of writing, it goes deeper than such things. I always want to create books that are equally thought-provoking and enjoyable, thinking from reader’s perspective is the most important thing; either you are an author, actor, film-maker, editor, musician, dancer, an artist or a businesswoman, everyone's love is for stories thus, doing the homework perfectly, targeting the right audiences is the strong USP for an author.

Could you tell us a bit about the organization, 'Yes! I Am Happy’

Yes! I Am Happy is an organization that is facilitating creative education for the holistic growth of children from poverty. I feel glad to take part in various programmes as a core team member of this wonderful foundation from the previous 4/5 years. Yes! I Am Happy was featured in UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring Report 2016 and also we were recognized by Times of India on the eve of Joy of Giving Week, October'14. To describe in a line: we conduct events, we donate, we educate, and we are trying to spread smiles.

What is your advice for budding writers?

Don’t be an ‘aspiring writer’ for years, instead just write! I feel the aspiring writer is someone who wants to write but doesn’t. If you want to write well, if you are in need of motivation to write more, you must read, read a lot. In the process of creating your own book, trust yourself, support yourself and go for it, it's important that you focus on giving your hundred percent and lastly, try whatever you want, explore different genres, you don’t have to think about publishing your work and to make it big instantly! It doesn’t work that way for many people thus, Just sit down and start writing, learning and begin to explore.

What was the reason to release your book on Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is a special day. It is a beautiful time when people open up and show feelings of love, affection, friendship, and admiration, and the book ANAMIKA explores the genre of romance. There are the poems on various topics which are directly or indirectly connected to the love between two people, I've written about what two people in the relationship goes through regularly, about the first love and the last break-up, feelings of men in love and the emotions of women, about the expectations, the tears, the struggles, the promises, about them forever and always thus, I truly wish that all the wonderful people out there grab this book and explore their own mind, and find the answers to many of their questions on love and relationships.
