Teach for India Fellowship: Where teaching meets learning

Suraj Subhash Yadav

Since childhood, I always wanted to be a teacher. And that drove me to take up the Teach For India Fellowship. The idea of the fellowship is to provide quality education, create a safe space for children and offer great exposure beyond textbooks. It was rightly said by Shaheen Didi, "The fellowship journey is a roller coaster ride" with various ups and downs. Yes, this really holds true for me. It has been six months and I am just loving it. From the very first day, it has been a memorable journey. Every single instance taught me something new. My children taught me all about love and affection. There have been days when plans were executed 100% and there have been days with zero productivity. Getting transferred to a new school with a new set of students and colleagues is exciting, but it's not very easy. What always kept me motivated were my kids. I believe that "I am because of what they are". I am not here for changing the system, I am here to bring change in the lives of kids. I am not only growing as a fellow, but I am growing as a leader.

Fellowship journey is not only about just being a teacher of academics, but it's also more about holistic teaching. I never thought that I would choreograph a dance ever but this fellowship taught me and made me do so. From an academic student-cum-teacher to a sports and dance fellow is an amazing transformation in me. Lunch Breaks are the best time to connect with your kids #informally and create a sharing space for them and this really helped me not only to connect with kids but also strengthen relationships with other people.

The fellowship for me has been a journey of #selftransformation.

All about the fellowship

The Teach For India Fellowship programme is an opportunity for India’s brightest and most promising youth, from the nation’s best universities and workplaces, to serve as full-time teachers to children from low-income communities in some of the nation’s most under-resourced schools. Through this experience of teaching in classrooms and working with key education stakeholders like students, principals, and parents, our Fellows get exposed to the grassroot realities of India’s education system and begin to cultivate the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to attain positions of leadership in education and identify their role in building a wider movement for educational equity in the country.

Tough selection process

The Teach For India Fellowship is a highly selective and coveted program, with a selectivity rate between 6% and 8.5%. Through the 3-staged process detailed below, we select the highest potential candidates for the programme.
